Banking in Spain

Big universal banks, a deep autónomo niche — and EU-wide reach

Spanish banking is led by large universal banks (Santander, BBVA, CaixaBank, Sabadell) with broad branch access and linkage-based fee conditions. Spain has an unusually large autónomo (self-employed) and SME segment, and EU fintechs (e.g. Qonto) now onboard freelancers and small companies faster and at lower FX cost. Accounts are euro-denominated and operate within the EU/SEPA framework.

Who regulates banking in Spain

Spanish/EU residents & companies

Widest access across the big banks and fintechs; in-branch or digital onboarding, typically days to a couple of weeks for an SL or autónomo with a NIF/CIF.

Non-residents / non-EU (NIE needed)

Possible but harder: a foreign tax identification number (NIE) and extra documentation are usually required, and many banks expect in-branch verification. Always verify current eligibility with the provider.

Entity types (SL, Autónomo, SA)

Sociedad Limitada (SL), self-employed autónomos and Sociedad Anónima (SA) are all bankable; the company NIF/CIF and escritura de constitución (deed of incorporation) are core requirements.

Spain banking — frequently asked

Can a non-resident open a Spanish business account?

It is possible but more involved. Non-residents typically need a NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) and additional documentation, and many banks require in-branch identity verification. The practical route is to obtain the NIE and (where relevant) incorporate a Spanish SL first, then approach a bank or an EU fintech that supports your structure. Always verify current eligibility with the provider before applying.

What are the NIF and CIF?

The NIF (Número de Identificación Fiscal) is the Spanish tax identification number. Historically companies used a separate CIF (Código de Identificación Fiscal), now unified under the NIF for legal entities. Banks ask for the company NIF/CIF — alongside the escritura de constitución (deed of incorporation) — when opening a business account.

SL vs Autónomo — which is right for my business?

An autónomo (self-employed) is the simplest route: lower setup cost and personal taxation, but you are personally liable. A Sociedad Limitada (SL) is a limited company with separate legal personality and limited liability, but more administration and minimum capital. Banks serve both: many offer fee-free or low-fee accounts to autónomos meeting linkage conditions, while SLs require the escritura de constitución and company NIF/CIF. Choose based on liability, scale and tax — and confirm account conditions with the provider.
