Banking in Sweden
Near-cashless and fintech-forward — banking runs on BankID
Sweden is one of the world’s most cashless, digitally-banked markets. The big banks (SEB, Swedbank, Handelsbanken, Nordea) cover most SME needs, while app-first challengers like Lunar onboard fast. Almost everything runs on BankID (the national e-ID) and a personnummer — which makes opening an account quick for residents but a real hurdle for non-residents. Sweden retains its own currency (SEK) and is not in the euro.

Who regulates banking in Sweden
Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority — supervises banks, conduct and prudential rules.
Sweden’s central bank — monetary policy, payment systems and financial stability.
Sweden is an EU member but is NOT in the euro area; the krona (SEK) remains the currency and the Riksbank sets monetary policy.
Swedish/EU residents & companies
Widest, fastest access. Onboarding is largely digital via BankID; a personnummer (or a representative who has one) and Bolagsverket registration are core. Often days for a registered company.
Non-residents / non-EU (BankID hurdle)
Materially harder. Without a personnummer/BankID, most banks expect a Swedish/EU footprint or in-person verification. Practical route: register the company with Bolagsverket first, then verify eligibility with the provider before applying.
Entity types (AB, Enskild firma)
Aktiebolag (AB, limited company), Enskild firma (sole trader) and Handelsbolag (trading partnership) are all bankable; the company must be registered with Bolagsverket and have an organisationsnummer.

Sweden banking — frequently asked
Can a non-resident open a Swedish business account?
It is difficult, mainly because Swedish banking is built around BankID (the national e-ID) and a personnummer. Without them, most banks expect a Swedish/EU footprint or in-person verification. The practical path is to register the company with Bolagsverket, then confirm current eligibility with the provider — challengers and the big banks differ. Always verify before applying.
What is Bolagsverket registration and why do banks ask for it?
Bolagsverket is the Swedish Companies Registration Office. It registers companies and issues the organisationsnummer (company number). Banks ask for proof of Bolagsverket registration — alongside BankID/personnummer and beneficial-owner information — when opening a business account.
AB (Aktiebolag) vs Enskild firma — which suits my business?
An Aktiebolag (AB) is a limited company: separate legal entity, limited liability, and the standard choice for growth or external owners (it has a share-capital requirement). An Enskild firma (sole trader) is simpler and cheaper to run but you are personally liable. Banks bank both; AB onboarding asks for more company and beneficial-owner documentation.
